West Wales Regional Pathology Programme

Update on Regional Pathology Programme: November 2023

Staff from Pathology services across South West & Mid Wales joined ARCH Regional Pathology Programme and service managers last month, in a series of workshops outlining progress on setting up a new Regional Pathology Service for the region.

This new regional service will be created in phases, with Phase 1 (recruitment of its senior management team) due to take place by April 2024.  This new management team will take forward the process of operationalising the new regional service into a full launch. In the meantime, work continues to create an Outline Business Case, including designing a proposed new Pathology Hub building at Morriston Hospital.

The regional service will encompass all Pathology services currently delivered across Hywel Dda and Swansea Bay UHBs.  It will take the form of an Operational Delivery Network, hosted by SBUHB, and will be responsible for commissioning Microbiology services for the region from Public Health Wales.

More detail is available on the regional service’s new Sharepoint site (click on WW Regional Pathology Programme Sharepoint to access).  A Frequently Asked Questions document is also available on the site.  As more information becomes available, this will be provided via the Sharepoint, future workshops and newsletter articles.

If you have a question about the new regional service, or would like to receive future updates about it, please email the team at ARCH.WWRPP@wales.nhs.uk.
