Views sought on a national vision for children and young people with a learning disability

Improvement Cymru is seeking feedback from children and young people with learning disability, and their care providers, on how they see their future health and wellbeing.

The Improvement Cymru Learning Disability team have spent the last 18 months consulting with children, young people and the adults who care for them, on the development of a national vision and an action plan of how these goals can be achieved.

The team have held listening events, visited schools and held workshops to ask children and young people about what they think should be in a vision, and as a result the work has been shaped by those who it affects the most.

Now the team would like further feedback on the final draft of the vision, which is committed to improving the lives of children and young people with a learning disability, ensuring they are happy and healthy now and in the future.

Rebecca Curtis, Senior Improvement Manager said: “Our journey towards a national vision started with the Learning Disability Strategic Action Plan (2022-2026) which seeks to ‘provide a consistent, accessible, and easily understood, Wales-wide approach to children’s services across the public sector and improve all aspects of transition services’.

“To do this, we listened to people across Wales including families, professionals, and young people about the challenges and wishes for the future of services. Key themes like feeling valued, included, and connected emerged and helped to shape the vision.

“We believe health, education, and social care should collaborate to support children and young people to recognise their rights and involve them in decisions that affect their lives.

“We would like to hear from young people with a learning disability and those who care for and work with children and young people with a learning disability.”

The survey will be open until 2 September 2024.
