This Safe, Reliable and Effective Care Hub is built on the Framework for Safe, Reliable and Effective Care developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Work led by the NHS Wales Executive, such as the Safe Care Partnership, draws upon the framework to support delivery of safer care across NHS Wales.
The framework sets out the interconnected elements required to create an enabling environment for improvement, bringing together the strategic, clinical and operational concepts critical for achieving safe, reliable and effective care.
Embedding the framework will support the development of a culture and learning system throughout NHS Wales that will enable improvement to thrive.
The framework contains nine interrelated components. Crucially, engagement of patients and their families is at the core of the framework – driving the focus of the work to deliver safe, reliable and effective care.
In this short video produced by IHI (3 mins 20 secs), safety expert Jennifer Lenoci-Edwards describes each component of the framework and how it can be used by organisations to create a sustainable system of safety.
If you’re starting out within your organisation, we recommend examining the culture domain first (psychological safety, accountability, teamwork and communication, negotiation and leadership) before exploring your learning system (transparency, reliability, improvement and measurement and continuous learning).
