Shaping the future of palliative and end of life care competencies in Wales

On 26 March 2025, professionals from across Wales gathered at the Village Hotel, Cardiff, for the Palliative and End of Life Care Competency Framework Event, delivered in partnership with Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).

The event was led by Project Lead Danni Garrett and aimed to collaboratively review and refine the Irish 'All, Some, and Few' competency framework, ensuring it is relevant, inclusive, and fit for purpose in the Welsh context.

This was a truly collaborative and multidisciplinary day, bringing together voices from nursing, midwifery, healthcare support roles, and higher education institutions, alongside clinical experts.

The goal is to ensure that the framework reflects the breadth and depth of practice across roles and settings, supporting a consistent, compassionate, and competent approach to palliative and end-of-life care delivery across Wales.

Key outcomes from the day included:

  • Lively and thoughtful discussions on the adaptability of the Irish framework for the Welsh workforce
  • Cross-sector insight into the realities of practice and education
  • A shared commitment to co-producing a robust and meaningful framework that supports high-quality care at every level

The energy in the room was a testament to the dedication of the Welsh workforce to getting this right—not just for professionals, but for the individuals and families they care for every day.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day so productive and inspiring. We look forward to sharing updates as the framework continues to take shape.
