There are an estimated 100,000 people living with a neurological condition in Wales, and around 2,500 new diagnoses every year.
The number of those diagnosed with a neurological condition is set to increase over the coming years as more children survive beyond birth into adulthood, and, as the UK’s population ages, so does the number of people living with age-related neurological conditions.
These conditions not only significantly impact the individual, but also those around them, with regards to their quality life and ability to live independently. This impact on quality of life is greater than that of cardiovascular conditions or diabetes.
The Neurological Conditions Network will work to improve the quality, safety, sustainability and outcomes of NHS Wales services within its area of scope.
It sits within the NHS Executive as a core component of the ‘learning health and care system’ described in the National Clinical Framework, and in a space between operational service delivery in health boards and trusts, and the formulation of policy and strategy in Welsh Government, guided by the Quality Statement for Neurological Conditions.
