Eye health and retinopathy

This booklet explains about general eye health, the basics of taking care of your vision, and how your eye health can be affected by Type 1 diabetes.

Over time, having lots of glucose in the blood can affect the tiny blood vessels in parts of your body, including your eyes. This can lead to something called retinopathy.

Not everyone with Type 1 diabetes will develop eye problems, and simple steps can be taken to help look after your eye sight.

However, if you do experience problems it’s important you know where to get help. As with all diabetes complications, the best way to reduce the risk is to try and keep your blood glucose levels within range as often as possible.
